At Just 15, Vincent Matheny Is Already Making His Mark as an Artist

At just 15 years old, Vincent Matheny has already accomplished something many artists spend years working toward: a public exhibition of his artwork.

A Junction City native, Vincent’s artistic journey began early. Born in Manhattan, Kansas, and raised in Junction City, he credits much of his creative inspiration to his father, whose interests in Formula 1 racing, comic books, graphic novels, and art helped spark Vincent’s own love of drawing and visual storytelling.

Homeschooled and self-motivated, Vincent has been able to dedicate significant time to developing his skills. What began as a personal interest soon became something more serious. In 2022, he received his first commissioned project—a drawing of African elephants—and has continued building his portfolio ever since.

Vincent’s work reflects a wide variety of influences. He admires artists ranging from Renaissance masters Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci to modern comic book legends Jim Lee and Greg Capullo. He also studies contemporary artists and educators through online platforms, constantly looking for ways to improve his craft.

One of the themes that appears throughout Vincent’s work is his fascination with animals. He is drawn to their complexity and often chooses subjects that allow him to explore their unique characteristics and stories. Tortoises, penguins, and pangolins are among his favorite animals to create.

His interests extend beyond wildlife as well. Two of his favorite pieces are a detailed drawing of a Ducati 888 motorcycle and a work inspired by The Green Mile. The Ducati appeals to him because of the company’s history and connection to MotoGP racing, while The Green Mile resonates with him for its message of hope in difficult circumstances.

Like many artists, Vincent’s creative process begins long before pencil touches paper. He spends time searching for the right reference image before developing a light sketch, refining the outlines, adding ink, and finally bringing the piece to life with color. Ironically, he says finding the perfect reference image is often the most challenging part of creating a new work.

Having his artwork featured in an exhibit is a milestone Vincent describes as surreal. “It feels like I’ve climbed a mountain by working this long, and now I feel this is a good spot to rest,” he said.

While Vincent is proud of how far he has come, he hopes visitors leave with more than an appreciation for technical skill. He wants people to recognize that talent can emerge at any age and that young artists are capable of producing meaningful, high-quality work.

Most of all, he hopes viewers walk away feeling inspired. “I just hope they take away something that makes them feel happier than when they walked in.”

The Junction City Arts Council is proud to showcase the work of this talented young artist and invites the community to experience Vincent Matheny’s artwork firsthand.

The public is also invited to attend Vincent’s Artist Reception on Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Junction City Arts Council, 131 W. 7th Street in Junction City. Visitors will have an opportunity to meet Vincent, view his artwork, and celebrate the achievements of this emerging local artist. Light refreshments will be served.
