Artist Spotlight: Travis Marak Brings Vivid Intensity and Reflective Abstraction to JCAC

Junction City Arts Council is proud to showcase the compelling and deeply expressive work of Travis Marak, now on display in the Rago Gallery and the Markley Lobby of the Munson Arts Education Building, 131 W. 7th St. in Junction City, Kansas.

The public may view the exhibition by entering through the CL Hoover Opera House, 135 W. 7th St., Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Marak’s artwork is distinct, energetic, and intensely personal—a mix of abstract expression, layered textures, unexpected color combinations, and visual rhythms inspired by music and everyday life. His paintings invite viewers into a world where emotion leads, instinct guides, and meaning unfolds slowly the longer you stand with each piece.

Art Rooted in Reflection and Real Emotion

When asked what inspired the works in this exhibition, Marak explained that his creativity is fueled by music, life, and the ongoing effort to understand himself and the world around him.

“Art is my therapy,” he said. “Whatever is on my mind at any given moment, that’s what inspires the work.”

The paintings in this show span that inner landscape—works that burst with movement, others that feel contemplative, and many that weave both attitudes together. Marak’s willingness to follow his internal compass gives his work an authenticity that resonates immediately with viewers.

“Pendulum”

A Standout Work: Pendulum

While he loves each piece equally, Marak shared that “Pendulum” holds a special place in this collection. Created during a period of deep thought, the painting continues to challenge and provoke him even after its completion. He describes it as a work that sparks reflection about the self, society, media, and the world at large, a piece that remains relevant no matter when or how it’s viewed.

A Style as Unique as the Artist

Asked to describe his artistic style in a few words, Marak summed it up simply and honestly: “Different, just like me.”

His work blends bold abstraction, layered techniques, expressive mark-making, and musical influences. Each piece feels like a visual record of an inner moment—sometimes loud, sometimes quiet, always genuine.

What He Hopes Viewers Experience

Marak wants people to give themselves time with his art—not rush, not look quickly and move on, but really look.

“I hope they take their time and enjoy themselves,” he said. “I want them to see whatever they need to see in my art.”

His work does not demand a single interpretation. Instead, it encourages viewers to notice what rises to the surface for them personally—emotionally, intellectually, or intuitively.

What’s Next for Travis Marak

Looking ahead, Marak plans to continue exploring the depths of his thoughts and imagination. He hopes to incorporate more storytelling into future pieces while also challenging himself with new techniques and subjects.

“I just love creation,” he said. “Whatever my brain decides, that’s what I’ll make next.” He also shared that he hopes to someday explore portraiture, adding yet another dimension to his evolving artistic journey.

A Final Message From the Artist

Marak encourages everyone—even those who have never considered themselves artistic—to create something.

“Create anything at all,” he said. “Then stand back and try to understand your creation on a deeper level. It’s one of the best things you’ll ever do.”
